What a Day

we raised our glasses all in celebration of the news
their separation was the best thing at the time
the past few weeks had been a trying time for all involved but
now the smoke had cleared their eyes could see that it
was way too late

we are the friends of the unhappy couple
we are the friends of two who broke their ties today

and what a day it is to waste away
it's Bob and Carol's blackest birthday

the wedding plans had stalled and everyone had seen the truth
they faced the wall and touched eachother now
like total strangers
all in all they'd felt the call for distant solitude and
chapters from a Russian novel spring to mind
to find description

and everyone cried
and everyone sighed
and watched their boat go down

and what a day it is to waste away
it's Bob and Carol's blackest day...

and everyone cried
and everyone sighed
and watched their boat go down

so now the friends have gathered silently
to say hello
attend the funeral where no one liked the dear departed
the conversation turned to things that happened years ago
and everyone agreed
that they were doomed before it even started

and everyone cried
and everyone sighed
and watched their boat go down

and what a day it is to waste away
it's Bob and Carol's blackest birthday...
